Shanghai Airport Immigration issued a 10,000 RMB fine to “Peter”, a foreigner who overstayed his visa by 33 days. This is the first 10,000 RMB fine issued by the Shanghai immigration authority since the implementation of the “Exit-Entry Administration Law of the People’s Republic of China” on July 1.

Article 78 states that “A warning is to be issued to illegal residents; for serious cases, a fine of no more than 10,000 RMB (500 RMB per day of illegal staying) or detention of 5-15 days will be given”.

Peter apologized for his actions, and agreed to be punished according to the law. He also promised that he shall abide by Chinese laws and regulations in the future.
