Feminists Pledge to Boycott Spring Festival Gala over ‘Discriminatory Content’
Feb 25, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Over 1,000 netizens signed an online petition over the holiday, promising to boycott the Spring Festival Gala, over content that they claim discriminates against women.

The letter pinpointed 44 performances during the program that mocked single women, female civil servants and full-time mothers, saying that this portrayal could potentially damage women’s social status, given the huge cultural impact of the Gala.

The program apparently featured jokes that referred to women as ‘second-hand goods’ and ‘leftovers’- a common term for unmarried women over the age of 26.

One of the signatories, Zheng Churan told the Global Times: “we signed this letter because we found that most Chinese people lack an awareness of their rights, especially women.”

" Over 1000 netizens" in China talk thats like 4 people. how did this even get picked up? Also if they signed it over the holiday then the spring festival Gala was finished... so they will boycott next year? Way to strike when the iron is hot girls. " Only 360 days away! Theres no way this will be forgotten!"

“we signed this letter because we found that most Chinese people lack an awareness of their rights, especially women.” Their rights? As in legally enforceable by a fair state body? Oh boy I have bad news for you...
