Train tickets for the 2016 Spring Festival travel period will go on sale on November 25. This year’s Spring Festival Golden Week will be held from February 8 to February 13 and the travel period runs from January 24 to March 3. Tickets can be purchased 60 days in advance for holiday week travel. The tickets for the holiday travel period will be available until January 31.
A new rule stipulates that passengers must verify their identity at the train station when using tickets that were purchased online. This can be done using one’s passport or ID card.

I understand that everyone wants to go back home for this particular holiday, but the large crowds and over crowed trains make it a most undesirable and at time dangerous journey. The closest thing we have to this in the US is Spring Break. The difference is that everyone in the USA doesn't go on spring break at the same time. It is actually broken up into districts (for high schools) over the coarse of about a four weeks. It keeps crowds and traffic down as well as price hawkers from taking advantage of tourists competing against each other.
