Farmers Detained for Illegal Hunting After Capturing 1,600 Geckos
Sep 15, 2014 By eChinacities.com

6 people from rural Henan have been detained on charges of illegal hunting after they were caught with 1,600 geckos. The farmers used homemade traps to capture the geckos with the purpose of selling them at the local market.

The suspects have appealed against the charges saying that they were unaware that hunting the tiny lizards was illegal. Although geckos are not classified as endangered animals, they are ‘environmentally beneficial’ and so their capture and sale is against the law.

According to Chinese law, capturing more than 20 geckos constitutes a crime; capturing more than 50 geckos amounts to a serious criminal case and more than 100 can get you arrested. The suspects are currently awaiting trial.
