The ever-popular iPhone has become a symbol of “coolness” and is a must-have for many Chinese people, regardless whether they can afford them or not. Of course, you could make the argument that iPhones are popular because of their apparent reliability, but try saying that to Wang Kailin from Chongqing.

During the early hours of July 9, Wang was fast asleep with his iPhone placed soundly next to his pillow. Not long after he had fallen asleep however, Wang’s room emitted a sudden “BANG!” which caused Wang’s pillow and mattress to set fire and his room to be covered in smoke. Unfazed however, Wang remained fast asleep.

Upon hearing the blast, Wang’s concerned flat mate ran to his room and woke him up, and the pair then worked together to put out the fire. Luckily, Wang had rolled over the right side of the bed when the blast occurred, and didn’t get hurt.

After appearing online, this story gained a lot of attention from netizens. Experts have suggested that the explosion was caused by a faulty battery. The local Apple branch have since investigated the case, and have put the explosion down to the burning of battery fuel which had leaked onto parts of the phone’s interior.
