Earthquake in Ya’an Leaves 188 Dead, 25 Missing, 11,460 Injured

At 08:02 on April 20, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit Lushan county in Ya’an City, Sichuan. Tremors were felt as far as Chengdu, Chongqing, and parts of Shaanxi. As of 08:00 on April 22, the current death toll is 188, with 25 people being reported missing and 11,460 injured, with estimates saying that 1.5 million people have been affected by the quake.

Public security forces are currently undertaking search and rescue operations, and are also performing relief work in nearby Baoxing County. According to surveys, there have been no outbreaks of infectious diseases in the wake of the disaster.
