Residents of Gulou were heartbroken to discover the closure of area favorite, the Drum and Bell bar a couple of weeks ago, amidst fears that the entire area is to be torn down and renovated.
According to China.org.cn, local residents were informed in May by senior district officials that the hutongs surrounding the Beijing landmarks were to begin being torn down in June to make room for the new ‘Beijing Time Cultural City’ development.
The new project will feature a conference center shops and a museum as well as underground parking. There has been no news as to what will happen to the local residents of the area.
