Drug Use in China Increasing: Over 14 Million Drug Addicts

The plenary session of the National Narcotics Control Commission revealed that as of the end of 2014, there are 2.955 million registered drug addicts in China. The commission estimates, however, that the actual number of drug addict in China is actually over 14 million. 

In recent years, the use of heroin in China has decreased, but there are still 1.458 million registered heroin addicts in China. There is a high relapse rate for heroin addicts, treatment of the addiction is difficult, and the drug does serious harm to society. Synthetic drugs are more diverse and other unpredictable, and can cause self-harm, suicide, violence, homicide, car accidents, kidnapping, and more.

In 2014, a total of 887,000 people were seized as drug addicts, and 264,000 were put into forced isolation as treatment. This is an increase of 30.2% and 12.4% respectively from the previous year. 197,000 drug addicts were given outpatient drug treatment, and 45,000 were put into community-based rehab. 1 million former drug addicts passed the three year mark without relapsing.
