A dog owner was forced to pay over a hundred thousand RMB in compensation after an older woman tripped and fell after the dog made her nervous in the park.
Mrs. Xie, 66 was walking in a park in Chengdu when a puppy ran up to her. The puppy was off the leash and ran up to the older woman. She was scared and started shaking her keys at the dog. She fell over and landed on her back. Ms. Lei, the dog owner, paid Mrs. Xie 50,000 RMB in compensation. Later, Mrs. Xie took Ms. Lei to court.
Chengdu Business Daily reported that the court ruled that Ms. Lei should bear all liability for the accident because she did not have her pet on a leash. Mrs. Lei was ordered to pay the full cost of Mrs. Xie’s medical bills. She paid 85,800 RMB more, for a total payout of almost 140,000 RMB.
According to a Chengdu law implemented in 2010, dog owners will bear full liability for damages if they do not take full safety measures to control their animals.

If you, as a foreigner, find yourself in a similar situation: 1) Dont claim responsibility, and for God's sake dont pay any money to anyone. 2)By all means, Do NOT go to the hospital with the "victim". 3)If you feel you will be scapegoated, pack up your valuables and such and leave the country immediately !
