At the recent 34th session of the World Heritage Committee in Brazil, it was confirmed that a section of the historic architecture of the Shaolin Temple, known as “The Center of Heaven and Earth”, in Dengfeng city, Henan province, has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

This is the second time that a group of Chinese Buddhist temples have been recognized as World Heritage sites; a site at Wutai Mountain was the first. There are currently 39 historic sites in China that have been included as part of UNESCO World Heritage project. The newly recognized historic site is the third World Heritage site in Henan, following the Longmen Grottoes and Yin Xu.
