Concerns Over Grain Supply Due to Drought
Aug 21, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The Global Times recently reported fears over grain supplies in China as North China battles the worst drought in 63 years. The total affected area adds up to 4.39 million hectares, affecting the livelihood of 2.35 million people across the country.

Precipitation in Liaoning, Jilin and Henan provinces has been the lowest in the past six decades, and nine other provinces are also dealing with bad conditions. Amongst these are Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia.

To combat the situation, the central government has allocated a 10 billion RMB budget to encourage local governments to take measures appropriate to their individual situations. Also, Chinese meteorologists are offering to prepare artificial rainfall to salvage the situation, and ensure that there will be no grain shortages across the country.
