Chinese and Australian police authorities have agreed to cooperate in the extradition of corrupt officials guilty of embezzling funds, who have run away to Australia.

The Australian Federal Police and the Chinese police will work together on returning a list of fugitive ex-officials who have settled in Australia to enjoy their embezzled nest eggs. Australia is apparently one of the most popular destinations for corrupt officials according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The extraditions are a complicated issue as several people on the list are naturalized Australian citizens with permanent residency rights; furthermore, they also have the right to claim asylum under Australian law, which will make it much more difficult to bring them back to face trial.

This is the latest move in what Chinese authorities have dubbed, ‘Operation Fox Hunt’- an international search to bring corrupt officials who have fled the country to justice.
