Chinese State Media: No Sexual Harassment Here

Chinese State Media: No Sexual Harassment Here
Oct 18, 2017 By eChinacities.com

China’s state-run media has come under fire after publishing an article that claims the type of sexual harassment allegedly perpetrated by US director Harvey Weinstein does not happen in China.

The opinion piece, which appeared in China Daily, was written by a male Canadian-Egyptian teacher who had previously lived in China.

He claimed sexual harassment of women is less common in China because of the country's cultural traditions.

“Chinese men are taught to be protective of their women. Behaving inappropriately toward women, including harassing them sexually, contradicts every Chinese traditional value and custom,” he wrote.

However, critics both domestic and international were quick to react and dispel the claims, with many women taking to social media to recount their stories of harassment in the Middle Kingdom.

Others claimed China’s film industry is no better than Hollywood when it comes to the treatment of female talent.

According to a 2013 study by the China Labour Bulletin, a third of female university students said they had experienced sexual violence or harassment.

This compared to 70% of female factory workers in Guangzhou.

Xiong Jing of the NGO Feminist Voice said sexual harassment is common in the Chinese workplace, adding that the Chinese media does not offer a platform to victims.

On the eve of International Women’s Day in 2015, five feminist activists were detained for planning to hand out leaflets on sexual harassment.

Wasn't a woman's throat cut by someone who didn't like her pulling away from him feeling her up on the bus? Teachers routinely take female students out to late night dinners at hotels! In Zhengzhou and some other cities they need to resort to female only buses.

It's only harassment if they complain... and most women are too scared of the consequences to complain! Especially about a boss... I like the irony on my pager... the 'related article' on the right is about the restaurant offering discounts to women based on boob size! Yeah - no sexual harassment in this country... you know... cos of the respect and all....!

I guess making employees crawl in a circle, and taking their measurements of a female applicant is just a normal way to treat females. Do they read their own press?
