Chinese media has been abuzz recently with talk about Bill Gates’ “million-dollar” offer for condom inventors.

According to Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, not enough has been done to make condom use “more pleasurable”. As such, he is offering up 100,000 USD in start-up capital to anyone who comes up with a “next-generation” condom, and would continue to fund the business up to one million dollars.

Currently, about 750 million people use condoms, 15 billion of which are produced annually. Despite having been around in some form or another for about 400 years, the past 50 years have not seen very many technological innovations. The goal of this unusual offer, is to improve the experience of using condoms, so that more people opt to use them, which would have a number of positive effects, such as reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy, as well as AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
