Chinese Forrest Gump Reaches Nepal after Epic 5,000km Run

A man from Henan Province has been dubbed ‘Chinese Forrest Gump’ after he embarked on an epic 91 day 5,000 km run from Shanghai to Kathmandu via Lhasa.

34 year old Xie Zhanjun from Fengqiu county saved up to fund his run by working in a shoe factory in Dongguan, along with marathon prize money and sponsorship from his boss and colleagues. He was also taken in by friendly locals and hostel owners along the way.

This isn’t his first epic journey however; in 2012 he spent 172 days recreating the Long March and almost died after scaling 5 snowy peaks in 13 days.

Xie, who completed his first marathon in 2007, has this to say: “Running has become a part of my life. I will prove the people who see me as a madman wrong”.
