Chinese consumers prefer browsing for foreign brand clothing in stores rather than online. South China Morning Post reported last Wednesday that a new report from OC&C Strategy Consultants shows that Chinese consumers prefer physical brick and mortar stores when it comes to international brands.

OC&C partner Jack Chuang said that Chinese shoppers like to look at and feel clothing from international brands in traditional stores. The London-based consulting firm surveyed 2,600 Chinese consumers from March to May of this year. 57% of those surveyed said they preferred to buy from international brands in actual store.

43% said they said that they learn about new domestic clothing companies through social media sites like Weibo and WeChat. 32% said they learn about domestic brands through Baidu and other search engines.

H&M is one of the most recognizable foreign brands in China. The company has 300 stores in China.

The report concluded that building large numbers of stores in China is the most effective way for international companies to build brand awareness. However, the report stated that, “it is neither cheap nor easy.”
