China’s “Floating Population” Reaches 230 Million, Works 54 Hours a Week

On August 6, the National Population and Family Planning Commission released its "2012 Floating Population China Development Report," which stated that over 50% of the Chinese population lives in urban areas and that the "floating population" of migrant workers has reached a record high of 230 million. These workers account for 17% of China's total population, and while 30% of them remain in the same area for over five years, less than 10% secure resident cards. In addition, the report also revealed that these migrant workers average 54.6-hour workweeks.
