China’s divorce rate has risen by 13.5 percent as 3.5 million couples filed for divorce last year, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

2.8 million couples settled their cases through civil affairs departments, whilst 685,000 took their cases to court. Based on the data, sexologist Li Yinhe has estimated that the dissolution rate for marriages on the mainland currently stands at an all-time-high of 27 percent.

The rate of divorce was much higher in urban areas than rural areas, where divorce still carries a huge stigma.

Beijing was reported as having the highest rate of divorce in the country at a staggering 39 percent, although it still has a way to go to match up to the US divorce rate of 50 percent.

When you combine mainlanders' fixation on materialism and absence of moral values you get castles-on-sand marriages. The same two factors kick start and fuel extra-marital affairs producing, divorced or not, a huge number of toxic psychopaths.

The family structure never survives a society of consumerism & individualism. Family is about solidarity, commitment and sacrifice, while the latter is about satisfying any individual need for the right price.

YAY! Way to go China. At this rate you will be number 1. You can do it and see the amount of international respect you will earn when you pressure people into marriage and they are not ready all in the name of 'tradition' !!!
