On May 21 China and Russia signed a momentous treaty that will see China import up to 38 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia for 30 years starting in 2018. Talks over the cooperation have been ongoing for over 10 years, with an agreement finally reached yesterday.
The move is seen as beneficial for both sides especially as Russia looks to do more business with the East following growing tensions with the West. The total cost for China will eventually add up to around 456 billion USD (which equals just under 2.5 trillion RMB). The exorbitant costs, as well as the construction of the pipelines for transporting the gas are the two most contentious outcomes of the announcement.
