China’s automobile sales rose by 6.8 percent last year according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reaching nearly 23.5 million units.

China has been the biggest auto market in the world since 2009 and its sales continue to grow year on year in a market that has suffered from flagging sales in Europe over the past two years.

17.93 million of those were passenger vehicle sales, a 15.7 percent increase from last year.

According to Business Insider, there were several reasons for the extraordinary growth including the revival of Japanese brands after they took a downturn in 2012 and a strong demand for replacing old cars with new ones.

Projections for next year predict an increase of 7 percent to 25.13 million units.
