China Denies Entry to Mentally Ill Foreigner for the First Time
Apr 20, 2015 By eChinacities.com

The Hangzhou airport quarantined and eventually denied entry to a foreign traveler on April 19 at immigration for having a mental illness. The traveler was a man from Malaysia who was discovered acting strangely during a routine inspection. Zhejiang Hangzhou Airport Quarantine Bureau supervisor Sun Ting said that the man had demonstrated abnormal behavior and seemed to be overexcited. Quarantine professionals investigated the man further and found evidence of delusions, lack of self-awareness and symptoms of a behavioral disorder. He was taken to a psychiatric hospital and observed for a month. Doctors concluded that the man indeed had a serious mental illness. The man was then put on a flight back to Malaysia.

The 2010 “People's Republic of China Frontier Health and Quarantine Law,” states that those with severe mental illness will be denied entry into China. This is the first incident of a person with mental illness being denied entry at immigration in China.

Next time he will be. They weren't going to deport the first time somebody from a country where the motives may seem other that what they are.

Evidence of delusions and lack of self awareness? This all points towards a career in politics. Let the man in!

By the way, I don't believe a country keep a foreign in a hospital for one month just to be evaluated ! A mental illness can be evaluated in 1 hour of consultation ! Why is need one month ? is ridiculous !

How the hell they denied him to entry if they accepted him in a hospital in China ???? Is exactly exchange what they did in fact ! Maybe this was his scope, to come here to treat his problem ! and for free as I guess he refused to pay being obligated if his scopes was others for what he came here !

Is anyone really buying this story? It seems too strange, a month in a Chinese hospital? These hospitals get people in and out within 2 minutes and lets not forget that this for money, how did he pay for that whole month? I'm not buying the whole story.

echinacities got the right photo. One look and you can bet it is a china entry queue. Would be fun to find one for the exit and title it with something interesting...

Seems a bit of a contradiction that. He was observed for over a month but denied entry into China. Also, if he had a mental illness, why didn't they just send him back to Malaysia to receive the far better healthcare that one would expect there.
