China Box Office Tops US for the First Time
Mar 05, 2015 By eChinacities.com

Revenue from Chinese box offices has overtaken the US for the first time this February, as 650 million USD was generated from Lunar New Year sales.

The US was close behind however, with a total of 640 million USD.

Research firm Entgroup has suggested that China is poised to become the world’s biggest box-office market this year, as movie theatres continue to open around the country at a rapid pace.

However, February doesn’t reflect the normal box office takings for China, as national holidays typically see box office attendance skyrocket.

In a country that has twenty percent of the worlds population it only surprises me that they haven't been number one in takings before. However I would take more notice when China starts to produce movies that the rest of the world want to see, rather than just Chinese audiences. It would also be interesting to note what percentage of these record takings were paid to watch foreign movies rather than domestically produced ones.

Yes, I'm sure the record box office takings included big foreign flicks!

It isn't a surprise considering the quantity of counterfeit VCDs and DVDs mainlanders bought for decades. Even the army was involved because of the huge profit in this sector.
