The Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe was successfully launched on the morning of December 2. After flying for half a month, it will touchdown in the Rainbow Bay District on the moon during the lunar morning. Upon its arrival, aside from performing the first ever Chinese soft landing on the moon, it will perform a lunar surface survey. The Chang’e-3 will be the first to place an observatory on the moon; the use of this moon-based telescope onboard the lunar probe will signify the first international usage of looking at the stars, star systems and galaxies from the moon surface. Additionally, through the use of the onboard radar system mounted to the undercarriage of the lunar rover, the Chang’e-3 will perform tests upon the strata of the moon’s soil and dust.
