Julia Dawson-Garratt, one half of the Canadian couple that was detained on suspicion of espionage last year has been released on bail, while Kevin Garratt remains in police custody.
Julia Dawson-Garratt is on conditional release months after she and her husband were arrested without charge several months ago. While she has been barred from leaving mainland China for one year, her husband has been held under criminal detention on suspicion of spying and stealing state secrets.
The couple, who ran a popular coffee shop in Dandong, was originally detained on suspicion of accessing top secret information and espionage.

"So the Chinese government can arrest and detain you for seven months without formal charges and proof?" Sadly Rob yes they can...They can do pretty much whatever they want to do. Not much our Governments can do about it either. But my feeling is that this couple were involved in the "Underground Railway" for N.Korean defectors...A noble but very stupid enterprise. Just my feeling...

It was be nice if they gave more details... and the verdict. This part especially worries me "were arrested without charge several months ago". So the Chinese government can arrest and detain you for seven months without formal charges and proof?
