According to the Nanjing Passenger Transport Management Office, surveillance systems comprising of cameras and recorders were recently installed in more than 3,000 taxis in Nanjing. Passengers will be recorded by the system during their cab rides. During the next two years, about 8,000 taxis will have the surveillance system installed. The surveillance system consists of a camera, which takes eight photos every minute, and a microphone, which is running 24/7. All audio files and photos collected are sent via the car’s GPS system to the Public Security Bureau and the surveillance centre at the Passenger Transport Management Department. Traffic police have ensured that the use of the system’s recordings is under a strict system of management, and that the public has no need to worry about leakage of private information.
