Last year, British private investigator Peter Humphrey was jailed for two and a half years in China for selling personal information. A Shanghai court recently decided to release Humphrey early, and he was freed today.
Humphrey was released early from prison for health reasons. He has been transferred to a Shanghai hospital for cancer testing.
His case was connected to the GlaxoSmithKline corruption scandal. Humphrey and his wife secretly filmed a Chinese executive having sex with his girlfriend and sold it to GlaxoSmithKline.
Humphrey and his wife confessed, but said they did not realize what they were doing was illegal.
After being tested at the hospital, Humphrey will be released and deported. The British Consulate in Shanghai is working to get him an emergency passport and help him leave the country.
Humphrey's son, Harvey said in a statement, “I am stunned and delighted. I hope to see my parents as soon as possible.”
Humphrey's wife Yu Yingzeng, also an American, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to two years in prison last August. She will be released this year on July 11.
