Brief Intro to Hangzhou Shopping

Shopping in Hangzhou was at one time limited to loading up on souvenirs, knickknacks and bolts of silk, but no longer.  While Hangzhou's regional goods are, of course, still available for purchase by the truckload, modern shopping malls, supermarkets and commercial plazas have sprung up everywhere.  Newer fashion centers include Jiebai Department Store, and any number of shops on Jiefang, Wulin or Yan'an Roads.  These "what you see is what you get" boutiques and malls come as a welcome relief to those who've had enough bargaining to last a lifetime.

Revel in a day of hard haggling for that special box of Longjing tea (try Meijiawu Village), that stunning brocade throw or a dainty silk parasol. Qing He Lane is the destination of choice for those shopping for handicrafts or porcelain, and there are plenty of places where you can hunt for antiques (old and new!) around the city as well. The night market on Wushan Road is an excellent place for bargain hunting, and you can pick up local snacks, paintings, memorabilia, silk fans, and much more. For affordable quality clothing, try some of the city's fashion markets, like Hangzhou Sijiqing Clothing Market on Hanghai Lu.

If it's silk you're looking for, Hangzhou is most certainly the place to be.  Hangzhou silk garnered its excellent reputation during the Tang Dynasty, when an increasing number of Persian and Arab traders began arriving in China by way of the Silk Road.  At Hangzhou China Silk Town on Fengqi Road, you can buy, sell, browse, and learn about the history of silk. Buying silk in China can land you a great steal or two, but be on the lookout for vendors passing off polyester blends as the real thing. Apart from silk fabric, keep in mind that Hangzhou has wonderful silk products like Hangzhou Embroidery and silk umbrellas.
