There is a traditional custom in China of paying the ‘bride price’. It’s like a deposit that the groom’s family pays to the bride’s family before the wedding, and if the man’s family backs out, or the man treats the bride badly, the bride’s family keeps the money.
The idea is that it’s like insurance to protect the marriage and make it last, as the man will have another, financial, incentive not to behave badly, besides, you know, common human decency.
This custom kind of works on the basis that men are the only ones who ever do anything wrong in a marriage, and that staying in a marriage with someone you don’t love because it’ll cost you loads of money, is a solid idea.
Recently in Anhui province, a young couple had decided the date for their big day, and the groom arranged to pay the bride price, according to custom. He arrived at the bride’s house to take her to the wedding, to discover that his intended’s family also required him to pay another 10,000 RMB (according to tradition, the brides family members won’t let the bride out of the house until the groom pays them money).
The groom and his family were all dumbstruck, as they’d already been cleaned out by the wedding costs and paying the bride price. Not knowing what to do, the groom just jumped in the car and drove away leaving his family and the bride in the dust.
The story has a happy ending however: the next day the bride went over to the groom’s house with a match maker and they got married on the spot.

Actually this story is incorrect. This is what really happened. 'The next day, the bride and her mother went over to the groom's house and proceeded to cut off the groom's penis with a cleaver and sell it to the local meat market'.

Nice to know he bought a slave rather than married a woman. I was told this by my in-laws (the bride price) and I asked immediately if this was the Shang Dynasty, since that's the last time slavery was truly legal in China. They said no. I told them to kiss my ass. They said "but this is China." Then I laid down the law. "If I am going to pay you, I own her. You lose all rights to her. I control her. I control what she does, what she says, what she wears, where she works if I allow her out of the house and who she knows. And if he disobeys, I have the right to beat her because I own her. And if I get bored with her, I can sell her off to someone else?" They just looked at the ground, bested, and quietly said "we don't want anything." Smiling, I said "good, because that's all you're getting ever." Solves the problem. Just develop a backbone.
