The Jinan Intermediate People’s Court has rejected an appeal made by disgraced former politician Bo Xilai and upheld the ruling that sentenced him to life imprisonment for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power. The unsurprising verdict was announced on the morning of October 25.

Bo was sentenced to life in prison of September 22, following the unravelling of a series of events last year that led to his ultimate downfall; these included a murder cover-up scandal involving his former police chief who served under him and wife who’ve since both received lengthy jail sentences. On July 25, 2013, Bo was formally charged with embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power.

Bo was only given one chance at an appeal and his sentence is now final. According to reports, the appeal appears to have been very short, with only an hour from the moment the convoy that delivered him arrived at court to the moment the verdict was announced. However, very few netizens and observers believed that his sentence would be overturned.
