These 69 stone steps are the only link between the first and second floors of the Drum Tower. The steps were one of the priorities in the renovation process.

Drum Tower Management Committee Director Wang Xin said, "The constant rubbing wears off the surface of the stones. Workers have added a wooden board on them. They are now painting a fireproof substance onto the board."

Over 16-hundred broken paving stones have also been replaced. The narrow steps posed a big challenge for the moving of the stones. All of them were removed by workers, forced to use primitive methods from long ago.

The railings have regained their shining look after being refurbished.

When the job is done at the Drum Tower, workers will move onto the Bell Tower nearby to carry out some repairs. The whole project is slated to be completed by Apr 27.
