Beijing Smog Disrupts Safety Monitoring System, Threatens National Security

On November 5, Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post published an article that stated that the smog that envelopes China not only threatens the health of Chinese citizens, but also its national security. Kong Zilong, a technology expert in surveillance monitoring, says that safety monitoring devices that can work properly in heavy smog have yet to be invented.

Beijing has invested large funds to construct a monitoring network that allows police to be able to monitor large avenues and streets in the city. However, as days with heavy smog become increasingly prevalent in the city, the effectiveness of such a system has been tremendously reduced. The suspended particulates in the smog is both vast in number, as it is densely packed together; this makes the smog act like a “brick wall” in obstructing the line of visibility. Some people are worried that terrorists will select a day of heavy smog to strike, according to the paper.

Finally, a real reason to do something about the air pollution. Cancer, infertility, miscarriages... nah... but not being able to keep an eye on the masses? Unacceptable!
