Beijing was once known for its huge number of cyclists, but in recent years the number of bikers has dwindled as cars have taken over the roads at an astonishing rate. In an effort to clear up both the skies and the traffic jams, the local government is going to revise regulations that discourage cyclists and increase restrictions on motorists. Currently, cyclists make up 19.7 of vehicles on the road; the Beijing government is hoping the new measures will bring that number up to 23 percent by 2015. According to the plan, in 2015, public transport will account for 45 percent of vehicular travel in Beijing, 23 percent will be bikers, 22 percent will be cars and eight percent will be people taking taxis.
