Beijing Officially Becomes a Candidate for the 2022 Winter Olympics
Jul 08, 2014 By eChinacities.com

The International Olympic Committee announced yesterday that Beijing is an official candidate for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Chinese capital will be up against Oslo and Alma-ata in Kazakhstan.

Beijing is making a joint bid with Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province and will build three new stadiums if the bid is successful. The 2008 Olympic venues would also play a role according to the official proposal. The government hopes that the Winter Olympics can act as a catalyst to promote tourism and winter sports in China.

The official decision will be announced by the Olympic committee on July 31 2015. If Beijing wins the bid, it will become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Beijing stands a fairly good chance given that the 2022 Winter Olympics is already becoming infamous as the Olympics that no one wants. Rising costs of hosting and austerity measures across the globe have been blamed for the lack of enthusiasm.
