Beijing Loses 8 Markets in Mass Relocation

Beijing Loses 8 Markets in Mass Relocation
May 20, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Bad news bargain hunters… the end is near. The Beijing municipal authorities are conducting a purge of wholesale markets in Beijing, meaning our source of cheap, knock off goods is going to be severely reduced.

The biggest blow will probably be the loss of the zoo market in Xizhimen. The multi-storey monstrosity was a labyrinth of bargain goods and was a favorite among foreign students and cheap people all over the city.

More than 9,000 shops and 35,000 workers will be affected by the relocation, which was officially written up and signed on Monday. The markets will be moved to Yongqing County in Hebei province at some point this year, but the exact dates are yet to be decided.

Reasons given for the move included ‘reducing population density and traffic congestion’ and the fact that the markets are ‘inconsistent with the functions of the country’s capital’, meaning the prime real estate is most likely being eyed up for development into soulless shopping malls.
