Beijing “Apartment for Job Seekers:” 26 People in 90 Square Meters

Cheap “apartments for job seekers,” with multiple bunk beds crammed in one room are a reality for many young and underemployed Beijingers. The apartments are mainly clustered in student areas.

Beds can be rented from 15 to 60 Yuan per night, and 400 to 700 Yuan per month. Some apartments even have their own official website with information about the flat and online booking, similar to a hostel.

One “apartment for job seekers,” located near Beijing’s East Third Ring Road costs 50 Yuan per night and 700 Yuan per month. Five bunk beds are jammed in the living room, and there are four more in of the two bedrooms for a total of 26 beds. Curtains around each bed give occupants a bit of privacy. There is a second living room spilt into several small spaces. The apartment itself is only 90 square meters.

These apartments are not just uncomfortable, they are illegal. Beijing law stipulates that each person in an apartment must have a living space of at least five square meters, and that not more than two people can live in one room.

Finally, Mainland China and Hong Kong are not so different, a minority of ultra wealthy and the vast majority living barely above poverty level, the Chinese dream!

True, but Hong Kong's poor are much wealthier than Mainland China's poor. And that's a key difference.

Yes but not as rich as you would expect, HK minimum salary is 9000HKD (8000RMB), median salary is 12000HKD (10500RMB). And the cost of living in HK is insane, you can rent a 40sqm room for 9k in the New Territories, forget about HK island and Kowloon. Never mind increasingly more Hongkers come to live on the Mainland.
