On May 22, the BBC published the results of an “international popularity” poll run by public opinion research body Globescan and the University of Maryland. Almost 27,000 people from 25 countries worldwide were surveyed. Germany came out on top as the “most popular country in the world”, with 59 percent of those surveyed having a positive opinion of the country. Next came Canada, the UK, Japan, France and the US. Meanwhile China and Iran came up near the rear—59 percent of those surveyed had a negative view of these two countries.

Among the 25 countries surveyed, 12 had a positive opinion of China, while 13 had a negative opinion. France had the lower impression of China, with 68 percent of those surveyed saying they had a negative opinion. This was followed by the US, Germany, and Spain. Also, 64 percent of those surveyed in Japan had a negative opinion of China, while the figure stood at 61 percent and for 55 percent for South Korea and Australia respectively.
