Beijing police confirmed yesterday that award winning director Wang Quan’an has been detained on charges of paying for sex, Shanghai Daily reports.

The director was apprehended on a tip off and found in an apartment with a 31 year old woman, surnamed Lu, who was also detained. According to a police statement, the 48 year old actor had agreed to pay her 800 RMB for sex. The statement also revealed that Wan stands accused of engaging in prostitution three nights in a row, one time engaging in sex with two women at a time.

An 18 year-old pimp and six other people were also detained. Wang’s wife, 28 year old actress Zhang Yuqi, who was believed to have been attending New York Fashion Week when the incidents occurred.

She thanked her fans on Weibo last night for their support and announced that although her feelings are ‘complicated’, she will ‘share the consequences’ of her husband’s actions.

Wang won the Best Director Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007 for his film ‘Tuya’s Marriage’; more recently, the release of his 2012 movie, ‘White Deer Plain’ was delayed for seven months as the sexual content was removed by censors.
