On January 7 the Shanghai municipal first intermediate people's court sentenced an Australian man to two and half years in prison for trying to smuggle nearly 3 kilos of gold out of the country. He will also be on probation for six months and has been given a 100,000 RMB fine.

The man was caught by customs officials in Shanghai in July last year trying to board a flight to Taiwan with 20 gold medals and two pieces of gold in a laptop bag. The total amount weighed around 3 kilos.
