American Medical Journal Reports that Acupuncture is Ineffective

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has published an article claiming that acupuncture is ineffective in treating arthritic pain.

The Australian study, Acupuncture for Chronic Knee Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial, concluded that “…neither laser nor needle acupuncture conferred benefit…for pain or function.”

Uproar ensued amongst America’s TCM community and several prominent practitioners have written to the journal, calling the study’s methods and conclusions into question.

One letter from David Baxter and Steve Tumilty pointed out that the study used lower dosages than are deemed necessary to have any effect, whilst Lixing Lao and Dr Wing-Fai Yeung noted that the subjects were tested at an interval of 12 weeks and one year after treatment; however, for acupuncture to be effective, treatment must occur at regular intervals, suggesting that findings after a year are invalid.

Eight scholars from five different countries wrote letters to challenge the findings on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

I believe TCM is hocus pocus and, as such, would not be a viable candidate to involve myself with it. Still, the brain is a powerful organ not yet fully understood. If some people want to go for the placebo effect of TCM, then good luck to them. But if they happened to ask me for my opinion I would advise them not to waste their money. Instead they should just go chew some bark or suck the guts out of a frog and other stuff like that.

HAHA! Notice how butt-hurt practitioners of quackery get when exposed to contradiction. The immediate defensive outrage is the same as when fundamentalist religiosity is challenged. --- Imagine if a study concluded that anaesthetics don't work. Practitioners of real medicine would be like "Haha, good one. Do without and see how that goes." --- I'm tired of bullshit claims being treated with undeserved sensitivity. Especially in medicine, waiving common standards of scientific rigour to protect quack doctors' feelings is pretty retarded.
