Alipay Put to the Test on Singles’ Day, Records 85,000 Transactions per Second
Nov 11, 2015 By eChinacities.com

On the morning of Singles’ Day, Alipay has already reported a peak of 85,900 transactions per second, double last year’s peak of 38,500 transactions per second. Singles’ Day, or 11/11, is China’s biggest day online shopping event of the year.

These numbers have helped Alipay surpass Visa as the world’s strongest payment processing platform. Lab tests have shown that Visa can process 56,000 transactions per second and MasterCard can process 40,000 transactions per second. In real life, Visa’s current record is 14,000 transactions per second.

A spokesperson from Ant Financial, which owns Alipay, said that the annual Singles’ Day sale is always a test of Alipay’s technical abilities. Ant Financial said that Alipay was able to handle the large flow because of the strength of OceanBase, its database management system, and Ant Financial’s cloud services.

Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang said that half an hour after the start of Singles’ Day, the payment platform was already handling 30,000 transactions per second. In just 31 minutes, Alipay processed payments worth a total of 19.1 billion Yuan.
