Despite China’s startling economic growth since its reform and opening-up, the concept of equal opportunity in the job place has yet to catch on.

A netizen called “湘西大山人” recently wrote a microblog in which he condemned the civil servant examinations in Hunan for eliminating him on the grounds of being “too ugly”. The netizen said that he came first in the written test and interview but was shot down after the medical check-up stage due to the acne on his face.

According to one of the doctors performing the medical check, “The People’s Police has an image. Ugly people can’t join its force.” Despite the discriminating claim, the netizen just about managed to pass the round after visiting a dermatologist. However, a non-medical staff member advised him to withdraw his application in order to “avoid trouble” further down the line. When the applicant refused, the staff member declared him as “unqualified”, eliminating him from the re-check.

On August 23, the Xiangxi Human Resources and Social Security Bureau responded by saying that following an examination of his face in which three doctors found scarring and difficult to cure marks, the elimination of the candidate was justified according the rules of the “Civil service recruitment examination special standards.”

You would think that the Chinese would have learned their lesson from 钟馗. Maybe my Chinese friend is right... China should not have democracy because they are not educated or civilized enough...
