A Buffet of Bugs Held at Huazhong Agricultural University

We know by now that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach but is it also the way to educational interest? Well Huazhong Agricultural University gave it a go. On December 1 they laid out a buffet of bugs for their students to come and try, hoping it would help them learn more about bugs.

It looked like the gambit worked; for these students, the bugs stop here - in their stomachs.

Hundreds of eager students came to check out the spread as though they had ants in their pants. 50 kg of creepy crawlies including bamboo pupa, bee pupa, maggots, locusts, and bamboo worms were crunched through during the lunch. To help them go down the bugs were accompanied by eggs (which, if you think about for too long, is also kind of gross), tomatoes and cabbage.

One dish labelled the "Golden Romantic" struggled to attract willing diners as its main ingredients were maggots. But after entomology expert Zhou Xingmiao ate some and then explained that it tasted “sweeter than shrimp!” some brave souls moved in for the munch.

Zhou knew how to persuade his crowd of non-believers, maybe even persuading some of them to take up courses in entomology.

I'm not used to a lot of Chinese dishes myself, but here must have been some things that even the Chinese aren't used to. This may be where the future starts for all of us. Six billion people and still growing; nutritional value in these bugs that can't be ignored forever; somewhere the two will meet.
