80% of Taxis in Xiamen Still on Strike

Taxi drivers in Xiamen, Fujian began a strike on Oct. 6th to demand lower administrative fees and higher starting fees for taxis, and 80% of all the taxis were still striking on the night of October 7th. Insiders say that the government is considering lowering the high rents for taxis. However, Xiamen Government recently added 1000 new taxis, which perhaps has further fuelled the driver’s discontent.

On October 6th, half to two-thirds of the 8,000 taxi drivers in the city were on strike because of the increase in private vehicles and public transportation, high-flying commodity prices, rising rents and the soaring price of fuel. The taxi starting price in Xiamen has remained 8 RMB since 1999. With this price, a driver can only earn about 500 RMB on a single taxi shift, of which 220 RMB must be handed over for rental fees. Fuel costs another 200 RMB or so, which leaves less than 100 RMB for the driver’s income.
