On July 16th, there was a crude oil spill into the nearby oceans following a blast in Dalian Port. Ifeng.com had subsequently asked its visitors in an online survey whether they would consider traveling to Dalian after the incident. A total of 5,487 netizens had participated in the poll; 84.3% had said that they would cancel travel plans to Dalian; 10.1% had said that they would continue on with their travel plans in spite of the oil spill; 5.6% had said that they would choose to wait it out.

A staff member with a travel agency in Beijing has commented about the cancellations with traveling to Dalian by saying: “The sea is covered with oil, and the smell is just too pungent. The beautiful waves of oceans are no longer visible under the thick oil. Who would want to travel there for a vacation?” The travel agency staff also revealed that in comparison with last year, travel bookings to the area have fallen from more than 1000 to just over 100; 80% of travelers have already canceled their travel bookings to Dalian with the agency.
