68 South Korean Travel Agencies for Chinese Tourists Shut Down

The South Korean government has withdrawn the licenses of 68 tour companies that offer cheap, low-quality tours to Chinese tourists. The banned agencies will no longer be able to engage in business with Chinese tourists.

Yonhap reported yesterday that there are 209 South Korean tour agencies that cater to Chinese tourists and tour groups. 170 of these agencies were recently reviewed and assessed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. The government reviews travel agencies and their licenses every two years.

Out of the 68 banned agencies, 27 were shut down because of “irrational ultra-low fares,” 16 were closed because they did not sign standard contacts with their guests, and offered low-quality guides with no translation skills. 14 were closed because of administrative demerits, and six were closed because they did not attract enough visitors. The remaining five agencies “voluntarily gave up their qualifications.”

The South Korean government has previously consulted with the Chinese government on tourism between the two countries. The Tourism Ministers of China, Japan, and Korea will meet later this year to discuss travel standards and high quality tourism in the three nations.
