632 Meters! Record-Breaking Shanghai Tower Begins Trial Operations

After seven years under construction, the Shanghai Tower has started trial operations. At 632 meters tall, the tower is China’s tallest skyscraper.

Tourists will be able to access the observation decks on the 118th and 119th floors of the tower via high-speed elevator. They then will be able to climb up to the 126th floor, 583.4 meters up.

The three elevators on the tower are incredibly fast—they run 18 meters per second! It takes 55 seconds for the elevator to reach the observation deck on the 119th floor. Shanghai Tower’s elevators are faster than the ones in Taipei 101, previously the world’s fastest elevators.

The tower will generate 1.189 million kilowatts of power annually from its 270 500-watt wind turbines mounted 580 feet off the ground.
