5 Held Over AIDS Demolition Debacle
Dec 30, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Four government officials have been reprimanded and five suspects are now in police custody after a group of AIDS patients were caught harassing people out of their homes to make way for construction projects.

Yi’an construction company hired a man surnamed Liu to head a demolition project, who in turn hired a six strong ‘demolition team’ of HIV and AIDS patients. They intimidated and harassed residents who refused to move out by threatening to infect them with AIDS, setting off firecrackers outside their homes and pelting their windows with steel ball bearings.

The group gained national attention last week after a photograph of the slogan ‘AIDS Demolition Team’ was posted on social media, prompting a police investigation.

China suffers under a deep mistrust and lack of understanding of AIDS which has led to disproportionately extreme responses to AIDS patients. Recently a village in Sichuan Province gained international notoriety after it petitioned to have an eight year old HIV patient evicted from the village.
