4 Wives, 5 Children: Shanghai Man’s Bigamy Spree Ends in Tears

4 Wives, 5 Children: Shanghai Man’s Bigamy Spree Ends in Tears

Zhao Chunming is a 50 year-old Shanghai man who to most looks like nothing more than just an ordinary middle-aged man…except for his four wives.

Zhao first married Lin Caiying back in October 2003 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. In December 2004, both Zhao and Lin welcomed a baby girl into the world, in what on paper seemed like the beginning of a normal happy home life. However, in July 2005 Zhao then married another woman called Zhao Ying, this time registering the marriage in Shanghai. Zhao’s second wife also gave birth to a baby girl in September 2007.

At the end of 2007, Zhao met Zhong Hui in Beijing. The couple eventually split up in February 2008 but they later got back together resulting in the birth of a boy and a girl in August 2011. And to top it all off, during 2009-2010, Zhao then rekindled with former lover Ji Ying, who gave birth to yet another baby girl in March 2010. The couple then eventually got married in December that year, this time registering the marriage in Jiangsu Province’s Kunshan.

Up to speed? Good.

Though the report didn’t really go into specifics, Zhao was eventually found out (use your imagination to picture the epic four-wife throw down), and was taken in by the local authorities on April 29, 2012, where upon the aforementioned information was recorded, and he was charged with committing bigamy.

During his trial, Zhao tried to downplay the charge, explaining that he wasn’t “together” with all four wives at the same time; instead he’d leave one, more or less break contact with her and then move on to (and impregnate) the next. Unsurprisingly, this excuse didn’t help much— Zhao was recently sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

"Man by nature is polygamy" I'm shock to find out that this phrase also covers Chinese men.The Sentence is too heavy for him.He should have gotten 2 days to rest in jail and decide which one of them he will finally end up with.

So while he's in jail for 18 months he can't provide for his 4 wives and the kids. That's hardly fair or logical. Is bigamy illegal? Wouldn't pay to be an emperor these days. No fun!
