35% More Foreigners Residing in China than Ten Years Ago

On September 13, the International Immigration Organization in Geneva released the “2013 World Immigration Report”, stating that in 2011 there were over 680,000 foreigners living in The People’s Republic of China, a 35% increase compared to 10 years ago. China is also becoming more and more attractive as an immigration destination country, the main reasons being China’s increasing pace of economic development, as well as its relatively low cost of living.

Among those immigrating to China, some originate from economically developed countries such as South Korea and Japan, as well as Europe, Canada, and America. Moreover, many more come from Hong Kong and Taiwan and even includes Chinese who studied abroad and chose to return to China. At the same time, South Asian and African countries also have a sizeable number of people immigrating to China, chiefly those entering China’s labor services market.

There is also another phenomenon, namely a rapid increase in the number of foreign students studying abroad in China. This student group mainly comes from South Korea, the United States, and Japan. Meanwhile as the number of Chinese students going overseas to study abroad is continuing to grow, the number of “Haigui” (a Chinese term for one whom returns home from studying abroad) is also on the rise.
