30,000 Couples Divorced Last Year in Beijing

Numbers show that while more than 180,000 couples married last year in Beijing, 30,000 marriages also ended in divorce. During the past 9 years, the number of newly-weds doubled, while the divorce rate surged fivefold, from divorces 5000 in 2001 to 30,000 last year. The 30 and under demographic account for the majority of recent divorcees; older couples on their second marriages, domestic abuse cases and internet romances also rank high on the list.
